I-17 RV dump, water and propane stops from Phoenix to Flagstaff

The I-17 RV dump stations we could verify for non-campers between Phoenix and Flagstaff are Love's #722 at Exit 263 in Mayer, which lists an RV dump and is open 24 hours, and Dead Horse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood, which charges non-campers $20. ADOT's rest areas, Sunset Point included, have no dump.

Verify before you go. Dump stations close for repairs, and fees and rules change. Everything here comes from the linked official sources, last checked . See a change? Tell us.

Campgrounds in Black Canyon City, Camp Verde and Munds Park list dumps but post no dump-only price, so call before you pull in. For propane, Pilot #1175 at Exit 262 lists bulk propane and Love's #722 lists tank exchange.

Love's at Exit 263 is the one public dump right on the freeway

Mayer and Cordes Lakes have three stops within about a mile of each other, at Exits 262 and 263.

  • Love's #722, 14414 S Cross L Rd. (Exit 263, Arcosanti Rd.): Love's lists RV Dump Service, Propane Tank Exchange, Overnight Parking and a Dog Park, and the store is listed as open 24 hours. The dump fee isn't posted, so ask inside. Phone (928) 227-9764.
  • Pilot #1175, 14905 Cordes Lake Road (Exit 262): Pilot lists bulk propane and a 24 hour store, but no RV dump. Phone (928) 642-1449.
  • Cordes Junction Motel and RV Park, 19780 E Hitching Post Way: the park lists propane, showers and a laundry. Its site doesn't mention a dump station, so call (928) 632-5186 before you count on one.

Why the rest areas won't help with your tanks

ADOT says plainly that its rest areas do not have RV dump stations. They do have restrooms, drinking fountains, vending machines and car and truck parking.

Sunset Point sits on the southbound side between mileposts 251 and 252 and serves both directions, about 40 miles north of Phoenix. It's a good place to stretch and look at the Bradshaw Mountains, not to empty tanks.

Christensen, at milepost 324 just north of Munds Park, is set up mainly for truck parking. ADOT lists portable toilets and hand wash stations there, with a caretaker on site 8 hours a day.

Verde Valley: a $20 state park dump and two RV resorts

Around Camp Verde you have one verified public dump and two resorts to call.

Dead Horse Ranch State Park, 675 Dead Horse Ranch Road in Cottonwood, is a detour west of Camp Verde. Arizona State Parks says its dump station is for registered campers, and non-campers may use it for a $20 fee. The park phone is (928) 634-5283.

Verde Ranch RV Resort, 1105 N. Dreamcatcher Drive, lists a dump station and propane and says it has 389 full-hookup sites. It doesn't post a price for people who aren't staying; call (928) 567-7126.

Distant Drums RV Resort, 583 W Middle Verde Rd. at Exit 289 by Cliff Castle Casino, lists on-site propane. Its site doesn't mention a dump station, so ask at the office (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) at (928) 554-8000.

Black Canyon City and Munds Park: campground dumps with limits

Both ends of the drive have an RV park that lists a dump, but each comes with a catch.

  • Black Canyon Campground, 19600 E St Josephs Rd. (Exit 242): lists a dump station and on-site propane sales. The office and store are open Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and closed Sunday. No dump-only price is posted; RV sites are $65 a night before tax. Call (623) 374-5318.
  • Munds Park RV Resort, 17550 South Munds Ranch Road: lists a dump station, a water fill station and propane refills, each marked as a paid extra. Dump, water and propane hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Its home page gives the open season as April 1 through October 31. Call (928) 286-1309.

A simple plan for the drive north

  1. Leave the Valley with empty tanks. The Phoenix-area dump stations on I-10 west of downtown list public dumps and propane.
  2. Need to dump on the way up? Use Love's #722 at Exit 263, open 24 hours.
  3. Fill propane at Pilot #1175 (bulk) or swap a tank at Love's #722.
  4. Staying in the Verde Valley? Pay $20 at Dead Horse Ranch State Park, or call Verde Ranch first.
  5. Past Munds Park, plan on the Flagstaff, Williams and Grand Canyon dumps; the closest verified public ones are in Williams.

Questions RVers ask

Do the I-17 rest areas have RV dump stations?

No. ADOT says its rest areas do not have RV dump stations. Sunset Point, between mileposts 251 and 252, has restrooms, drinking fountains and parking. Christensen, at milepost 324 north of Munds Park, is set up mainly for truck parking with portable toilets. Use Love's #722 at Exit 263 in Mayer instead, which lists an RV dump and is open 24 hours.

Where can I dump my RV between Phoenix and Flagstaff if I'm not camping?

Two stops are verified for non-campers. Love's #722 at Exit 263 in Mayer lists an RV dump and a 24 hour store, though the fee isn't posted. Dead Horse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood lets non-campers dump for $20. Black Canyon Campground, Verde Ranch RV Resort and Munds Park RV Resort list dumps but post no dump-only price, so call them first.

Where can I get propane on I-17?

Pilot #1175 at Exit 262 in Mayer lists bulk propane and is open 24 hours. Next door, Love's #722 at Exit 263 lists propane tank exchange. Black Canyon Campground at Exit 242 sells propane on site, and Cordes Junction Motel and RV Park, Verde Ranch and Distant Drums in Camp Verde list propane too. Munds Park RV Resort lists paid refills from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in season.

Can I dump at Dead Horse Ranch State Park if I'm not camping there?

Yes. Arizona State Parks says the dump station at Dead Horse Ranch is for registered campers, and non-campers may use it for a $20 fee. The park is at 675 Dead Horse Ranch Road in Cottonwood, a detour west of Camp Verde off I-17. Call the park at (928) 634-5283 if you want to confirm before you drive over.

Is the Munds Park RV Resort dump open in winter?

Munds Park RV Resort's home page gives its open season as April 1 through October 31, so call before you plan on it outside those dates. In season, its policies list water and dump station hours of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the dump, water fill and propane are marked as paid extras. The resort phone is (928) 286-1309.
